Reporting to: Design Manager

Summary of:Provide a service to production and site teams which helps achieve
Responsibilities company goals for safety, quality, delivery, cost and valuations.
Applications are particular welcome from candidates who have experience of station refurbishments and posses working knowledge of architectural metalwork. They should be able to demonstrate knowledge of designing/detailing balconies, balustrades, handrails, steel wall cladding, lift shafts and small structural pieces ie railway walk bridges.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES
Effective use of time and facilities to ensure that design targets, determined from client programmes and valuation targets, are consistently met.
Must work with their direct manager in managing client/engineers/architects in order to maintain target dates, or protect the company when delays are caused by client representatives.
Thorough and timely material procurement allowing time for effective pricing and avoiding delays to the preparation or site installation stages.
Effective use of design reviews on all contracts to ensure that design packages incorporate a balance of standard design details with production and site inputs.
Prompt and thorough response to all workshop and site requests for information/help/material.
QUALITY
Provide a high quality service to the production and site teams to include practical and user friendly designs, comprehensive and precise preparation, fabrication and installation information and prompt follow-up to shop and site requests.
Act on feedback of information, respond to ideas/criticism and learn from mistakes.
Provide quality information which enables the purchasing department to obtain the required product from the supplier within programme and cost targets.
Actively seek advice and guidance from production and site representatives on design details, material usage, methods, drawing information etc.
COST
Implementation of standard design details and practices which simplify design, fabrication and installation and reduce costs.
Communication of design details/changes to commercial team to ensure that costs are covered and the company maximises earning potential.
Protection of company in situations where the client’s instructions create a risk of fabrication or installation problems resulting in remedial work or rejection of product.
PERSONAL PERFORMANCE
Must regularly inform their manager of progress against targets and, where necessary, take action to recover delays and maintain target dates.
Must be prepared to request help and support if their brief is not clear, if design reviews are required, if they are uncertain of production capabilities etc.
Thoroughness and attention to detail to ensure that the complete scope of work, including extras from site, is identified and completed within target for each contract.
Effective and professional liaison with company contract managers, engineers and site representatives to obtain site information and brief/prepare them on site installation requirements.
Must introduce and follow simple procedures and systems within the drawing office to eliminate inconsistency and lack of thoroughness and help support trainees and new team members.
Must represent the best interests of the company at all times in a professional and positive manner.
Must set an example on behaviour, attendance, safety, fairness etc.
Must function effectively as a team player with all company personnel, maintaining clear and factual communication at all times.
