Java Software Developer

Overview of role

This is a good opportunity to work for a developer looking for some managerial responsibility to work for an established SME based in Birmingham. Due to an internal promotion they are looking for someone who in the future could move into an Assistant IS Manager position. Reporting into the Head of Business Improvement and with direction from the IS and Quality Director you will assist in the delivery of wide range of infrastructure and software projects including planning, coordination, and design as the business moves from an RPG to what is likely to be a Java based platform. You will also provide administrative direction and support for daily operational activities of the IT department

Key Responsibilities

*Assist in the design and development of a new Java based system as the business moves away from using RPG as its main programming language.
*Provide administrative support for the IT team to ensure smooth running of the department.
*Coding, testing, and analysis of new and existing programs and applications in all aspects of the business.
*Researching, redesigning, documenting and modifying software specifications.
*Preparing functional and technical specifications in collaboration with the Head of Business Improvement / IS and Quality Director.
*Work closely with relevant managers, directors and users to ensure projects are completed on time.
*Participate in stakeholder meetings when appropriate and be able to discuss technical issues in a clear and positive way to non-technical audiences.
*Liaise with network administrator and team of analyst programmers to assist in maintenance of existing systems and software packages to provide business continuity and customer service.
*Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent IT activities as appropriate.
*In the absence of the Head of Business Improvement oversee the IT department, projects and general activities.
*Provide user support involving technical troubleshooting and staff coaching.
