POSITION DESCRIPTION – SUPERINTENDENT

Position Title: Superintendent
Reporting to Project Manager

PURPOSE

The Superintendent will coordinate all site construction activities and supervise all field personnel to successfully complete projects as per contracts, safely, on schedule and within budget.

This includes maintaining the highest quality, supervising all trade and field personnel, while administering good construction safety insuring at all time that Zero Harm strategies and systems are implemented and monitored.

RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible for;
• All field personnel involved with the projects

Functional relationships with:
• Project Manager
• Sub Contractors
• Zero Harm Advisors
• Area and local support staff
• Key customers
• Key Stakeholders

• Promotes job site safety, encourages safe work practices and rectifies job site hazards immediately.

People Management
& Development

• Coordinates and supervises all construction actives.

• Communicates effectively using a respectful, personal manner.

• Provide positive leadership and mentoring to all personnel within the projects.

• Effective management of Disciplinary procedures.

• Involve team in setting clear targets for their area of responsibility.

• Manage, coach and assist direct reports to achieve their targets and improve their competency.

• Coach and develop direct reports to build capability in Human Resource leadership. Partner with HR Manager.

• Sites are well resourced.

• Fair and transparent management of all situations to achieve best out come.

• Each team member has a formal performance agreement.

• Business performance reviewed monthly with reports.

Customer Management • Actively develop strategic relationships with key customers in the locality, anticipating and resolving issues, and identifying opportunities for new business.

• Actively develop customer relationship management plans for the area.

• Represent Downer as a senior manager in the area.
• Issues are anticipated and resolved and conflict is avoided. Downer increases market share in profitable areas of business.

• Plans are in place, monitored and reviewed regularly.

• Profile of Downer maintained and developed and interests of the business advanced. Issues dealt with appropriately.

Monitoring Safety, Quality Environment

• Promote health and safety, quality and environmental responsibilities by working closely with management and develop a strong working relationship with Zero Harm Advisors to facilitate resource sharing and best practice.

• Promote a safe working environment by ensuring a flow of information to all staff on relevant health and safety issues.
• Ensure all new staff in the project are inducted and training records up to date.

• Ensure local Health and Safety meetings are coordinated and driven.

• Ensure awareness is raised and initiatives implemented around environmental and quality management

• Ensure monitoring systems are implemented and maintained. Ensure audits and reviews to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, Downer policy and standards are carried out.

• Provide regular and relevant reports to senior management identifying and investigating any issues and proposing appropriate actions.

• Positive feedback on frequency and quality of information. Monitoring shows staff well informed.

• All sites met with the requirements of Zero Harm.

• Frequent review of staff induction and training records

• Meetings held regularly and positive feedback from participants regarding value.

• Promote feedback from all on sites. Issues are raised early.

• Proactive monitoring and reporting systems.

• Early advice of issues and problems. As above.

• QA and SQE plans are reviewed.

• Site audits and inspections reviewed.

Resource Management
• Manage the allocation of people, plant, technology and resources to achieve outcomes.
• Utilisation maximized and costs reduced.

Delegations are as defined in the Company’s Standard Procedures Manual or project specific.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Civil Carpentry Qualification and/or 15 yrs plus experience in the Civil Carpentry/ Engineering Industry.
• Professionally and technically competent
• Experienced in scheduling, ordering, field supervision, quality control and production of all phases of construction.
• Experienced in managing multiple projects with extensive plant and resource knowledge.
• Analytical with the ability to examine issues from multiple viewpoints
• Analyses problems and makes sound decisions in a timely manner based on objectives, risks, implications and costs.
• Well developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage diverse personalities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective listening skills
• A self-starter, highly motivated and goal oriented.
• Excellent attention to detail with emphasis placed on quality.
• Orgainised with a systematic approach to tasks to achieve accuracy and efficiency.
