Graduate Advice

After several years of higher education, going into full time employment can be a daunting prospect. Use some of our graduate advice to help beat the post-university blues!

Postgraduate Advice

Many students are now at the brink of graduation with their prospecting careers ahead of them. However, there is a fight for job roles as new stats show there are roughly 70 candidates for every one job role available. This is predicted to rise to 25% of graduates being unemployed (People Management, 07/10).

If you are a student it can seem quite daunting, but don't let these statistics frighten you; just ensure you utilise the skills you have learnt at university to stand out from the crowd.

Surviving Post-University Blues

It is coming to that time of year when the students are returning to their halls for another year of studying hard. For a post-graduate this can be a very stressful and emotional period, reminiscing of previous university years. University life is very different from working 9 to 5 and the transformation can sometimes be difficult.

Although a lot of students want to go travelling or focus on their career, moving back in with their parents can be a daunting prospect. It is important graduates focus on the future and moving on with their career. Here are a few steps you can follow to combat the university blues:

  • Focus on your career

Now that you have a degree you can begin to apply all the new knowledge you have acquired to good use. Think about where you see yourself in 5-10 years time… having a job you enjoy? Working your way to the top of the career ladder? Maybe even owning your own company.

  • Take up a hobby

After you finish university it is likely that your social circle will decrease and friends will go their separate ways. You should embrace new friendships and meet people outside your current friendship group, starting a new hobby will increase your chances of finding like-minded people.

  • Continue your learning

Just because you have finished university, it doesn't mean your learning has to stop, you can continue your learning in your own time and at pace that suits you. No more deadlines; no more exams. Learning because you enjoy a topic.

  • Looking to the future

Many students finish university and decide they don't want a career in the subject they have studied. Don't panic! Focus on how you see your career developing, which will allow you to follow a path that suits you.
