Job Title Technical Director - Landscape
Salary/rate £55000/annum + benefits
Location Edinburgh, Scotland
Job Number 107737141
Posted 30/01/2012 (08:31)
Agency/Employer Project Design Services (East Anglia) Ltd
DescriptionRegister your CV A prestigious and world leading multi-disciplinary consultancy has a fantastic career opportunity for a Landscape Technical Director, to be based in their Edinburgh Office. You would be part of their hugely busy and successful Environment Energy Team, who are currently delivering some 18GW+ of consenting applications within the UK, but also part of a global organisation which would give you access to a significant array of very impressive clients and projects.

At the present time the consultancy in the UK sub-contract out all landscape and visual elements of their work as they have no relevant resource in-house. This is principally within the areas of:

• Feasibility and optioneering studies;
• Master planning, planning and consent applications;
• Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA); and
• Building, infrastructure and transportation design.

They would like to reverse this pattern and are looking for a proactive and ambitious individual to, over time, grow a team to handle all of their internal demands in-house. They are a rapidly expanding business, particularly in the energy and industry sectors, and we see the addition of a vibrant and successful landscape group as complimentary to their ambitions to provide a better and more comprehensive service to existing and new clients.

They would like to recruit an individual who can initially take over (with a small team) the quality control and management of existing sub-consultants, with a view to assuming some of the duties over time (and with the approval of the client). They also have an extensive portfolio of clients and projects to whom they can immediately present their landscape and visual abilities, once grown, and there is expected to be a very rapid acquisition of fee earning work. Also, you are expected to have your own network of potential clients that you can approach for opportunities and projects.

Please note that the landscape and visual work required could be for projects outside of the energy and industry sectors, reflecting the large and multi-disciplinary nature of the company. This could include, for example, work within their ports and harbour group, within their Environment Agency Framework, and/or within their infrastructure, transportation and planning projects.

The successful applicant will be expected to possess a strong landscape consultancy background and be able to demonstrate the development and leadership of a successful team. The candidate will have a proven track record in a project managerial/directoral role, co-ordinating and managing the landscape elements of large infrastructure projects. The ability to provide due diligence and expert witness services to their client base would be hugely desirable.

Main Responsibilities:

• Technical and line management lead for all landscape and visual elements within the company's portfolio of clients and projects;
• Integration and communication with similarly skilled personnel throughout the wider company, to offer landscape and visual skills on an international basis;
• Project management and/or directing, and coordination of landscape and visual elements of their projects;
• Liaising with clients and internal multidisciplinary teams;
• Undertaking landscape and visual impact assessments for renewable energy, marine and infrastructure projects;
• Preparation of fee proposals;
• Assisting with business development; and
• Report writing- production of landscape and visual Environmental Statement (ES) chapters.

This is very much a technical position where a large amount of flexibility will be awarded to the right candidate to grow this business in the manner they see best. You will report to the Energy Group Director in the first instance but in all matters landscape and visual you will be seen as the UK lead. In effect, this is a position that offers enormous opportunities for a driven, energetic and ambitious candidate, with significant opportunities and client networks already in place.

PROFILE

It will be essential for the candidate to demonstrate a good network and knowledge of their respective technical field. Potential opportunities to generate new work will be pursued through prior agreement with the Group Director and Business Development Director. Key competencies in this role will include:

• Good analytical skills;
• Solutions-oriented approach;
• Technical expertise that will complement the existing team;
• Effective personal planning and organising;
• Being focussed on their customers' needs;
• Sensitivity to the company's wider vision and mission;
• Strong writing skills; and
• Be able to perform in a team.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• BSc (essential) and MSc (desirable) in a related discipline.
• Experience in landscape/environmental consultancy (essential).
• Experience in project management and EIA (essential).
• Knowledge of the energy sector (essential) and previous experience of working on renewable projects.
• Understanding of relevant legal standards, the EIA process, and relevant government policy (essential), particularly relating to the sectors described above (desirable).
• Landscape and visual technical skills (essential).
• IEMA membership or similar relevant chartered status (desirable).
• Financial management and administration experience (essential).
• Report-writing and presentational skills (essential).
• Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills (essential).
• Ability to work on own initiative and also to work as part of a growing team (essential).
