Job Title: Applications Engineer
Purpose of the job
Responsible for the review of client enquiry specifications for LV and MV switchgear and associated products. Ensure the timely and accurate production of product costings. Prepare corresponding quotations for customers/end users liaising with internal engineers to optimise quotation detail and format in order to maximise profitable order intake. Obtain authorisation through internal channels and despatch quotation and related documentation. Assist in aspects of development of the Sales department systems with the Principal Applications Engineer and Applications Engineering Manager.

Key accountabilities
• To effectively communicate within the Sales & Marketing department to ensure Regional Sales Managers are aware of customer enquiry and status of enquiry.
• To provide support both technical and commercial to Regional Sales Managers.
• To produce accurate product costings within set timeframe using bespoke designed software systems in order to drive the whole process.
• To prepare quotations for customer requests ensuring that the technical and commercial risks associated with the quoting function are identified and quantified by the correct use of the quotation and approvals systems and complete liaison with internal customers occurs with the objective to maximise profitable order intake.
• To ensure appropriate authorisation sign off levels are met where required.
• To ensure the timely despatch of quotations and related documentation to customers occurs in required format (i.e. electronically / hard copy etc)
• To support fellow team members when required.
• To assist the Principal Applications Engineer on larger/complex quotations.
• To assist the Applications Engineering Manager/Principal Applications Engineer in the improvement & development of standard quote documents and procedures.
• To assist the Applications Engineering Manager/Principal Applications Engineer in the ongoing development of the network based technical and commercial library.
Communications
The Sales and Marketing function is operated by a small team operating internally and externally whose functions are interdependent.
Competence Profile
• A strong technical background with high levels of commercial acumen. Experience handling tenders & estimation projects within a switchgear environment is essential. Typical Projects can range in value from £50k - £1 million.
• The ability to meet the expectation of both internal and external customer, clients and suppliers through a sound understanding of their requirements, being responsive to their needs and exceeding their requirements.
• The ability to pragmatically solve problems using varied approaches and considering all relevant factors and options before making a decision/taking action.
• Proactive in approach, resilient under pressure, ability to maintain clarity and vision, and possesses a strong results orientation.
Employment & Educational Background
• The ideal candidate will have at least two years experience in Electrical engineering, preferably within an office environment.
• Specific experience of LV or MV switchgear or associated products is necessary.
A good educational background to at least ONC standard in Electronic/Electrical Engineering.

Purpose of the job

- Liaise with the Head of Applications Engineering to ensure that all costing considerations are made at the tender stage so as to maximise profitability whilst maintaining excellent customer service and satisfaction.
- Liaise with the Marketing Manager to formulate effective plans which will promote the Company’s products and contribute to market-penetration and market-development strategies aimed at increasing market share and thereby profitable growth.
- Ensure the Marketing Manager receives market intelligence via the Sales team to enable the timely production and analysis of market trends and competitor activity to contribute to the generation of sustainable competitive advantage.
- Monitor, manage and contribute to the selection and appointment of, the Company’s sales agents who are retained in territories where no direct sales subsidiary or employee is located.
- Liaise with colleagues in other group companies to ensure all global opportunities to obtain profitable orders are effectively exploited.
- Input to the specified, hand over, process between the Sales and Contracts Engineering functions, to ensure the optimum commencement of all contracts and that minimal non customer-introduced changes are subsequently required for the mutual benefit of the Company and its customers.
- Through liaison with the Head of Engineering Standards and Development, ensure all Regional Sales Managers have all required generic product design information and knowledge to be able to effectively promote the Company’s products and systems.
- Ensure all relevant QHS & E standards and obligations are met.
- Ensure departmental development needs are reviewed and met.

The separation of Sales Applications Engineering from the external sales function such that they
are now operated by independent, but interdependent, expert teams within the company. This has created a crucial communications interface at the forefront of which, are the
