Food Microbiological Scientist - Wiltshire
GENERAL JOB PURPOSE
Acting as a Food Microbiological Scientist
you'll assist the Head of Microbiology R&D in achieving the company's laboratory and production R&D/QA objectives. This will mean designing and carrying out complex experiments with Cat 2 pathogens, phages and food samples; establishing QC protocols; planning shelf life studies; optimising lab scale production protocols.
The holder of the post will also be expected to assume responsibilities for health and safety issues, management of a research budget and administration. The job holder will be capable of working on his/her own initiative as part of a small R&D team and have good communication and organisational skills, as well as the requisite scientific knowledge, skills and experience.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
R&D trials - Activity in close contact and agreement with the Head of Microbiology R&D including:
Establish and write trial protocols
Run trials (which may require flexibility) both manually and with complex instruments
Keep a lab book. Write critical reports of results.
AOAC validation trials (accuracy, linearity, lot to lot stability, limit of detection, repeatability, etc.)
Collaboration with external R&D institutes
Laboratory organisation & maintenance and Quality Control:
Supervise the writing the Internal Standard Operating Procedures for QC and production of small batches of reagents
Assume responsibility for agreed parts of the company's quality system
Scale up lab production batches up to industrial production quantities - activity in close contact and agreement with the Head of Microbiology R&D and Operations Director
Input into planning the proposed production facility
Collaboration with external manufacturers and subcontractors
Production quality assurance
External trial and user support
Provide microbiology information and support as required to external trial sites, both for regulatory and customer trial (this may require travel to and staying overnight at trial sites).
GENERAL TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS (Skills and Experience)
1. Master of Science degree or Doctorate or equivalent experience in Life Science.
2. 3-4 years of experience in a (food) microbiological sciences laboratory (preferably in assay development in a commercial setting) or in a ISO accredited lab. Familiarity with all the necessary analytical techniques and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
3. Familiarity with development and production of biological reagents and Production Quality Assurance
4. High level of competence in working and maintaining complex scientific instrumentation
5. Good and proven organisational skills
6. Experience in the use of phages (enumeration and propagation techniques etc.) would be an advantage
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
1. A well motivated and ambitious person for a medium term career development
2. Ability to take full responsibility for a project (research or small scale production)
3. Strict laboratory discipline is of the essence, including an extremely systematic approach to investigation areas
4. Reasonable flexibility to vary working hours as experimental design or other tasks may demand
5. Computer literacy (MS Office etc.) is essential
6. As our facilities are within a Ministry of Defence site, the ability to pass MoD security clearance is required (UK nationals or 5 years UK residency).
