Job Description:
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Software Development Team Manager will Manage a team of software developers working on new product developments and support and maintenance of released products.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff Management;
Provide leadership and motivation to a group of software developers.
Manage the team in line with current HR policies and deal appropriately with conduct issues by following correct disciplinary procedures.
Manage performance of team through regular and ongoing performance reviews.
Identify training requirements for team members.
Maximise the contribution of each team member through coaching and the performance review process.
Ensure your team operates smoothly when you are absent.
Participate in the recruitment process.
Manage salary increments within team, ensuring they are consistent with job title, responsibilities and performance.
Delivery;
Plan development activities for product releases in response to agreed release definitions, coordinating plans with other team leaders and product release manager.
Assign work packages to individual team members and monitor implementation.
Report on progress against agreed plans to Software Development Manager and manage any deviation.
Responsibility for identification of underlying causes of problems and development of procedures to prevent re-occurrence including improved documentation, process change and training requirements.
Responsibility for ensuring that all members of the team have a thorough understanding of supported systems and associated troubleshooting / problem resolution skills, in order that the team can function effectively in the absence of any team member.
Plan development activities for bug fixes in response to agreed release definitions, coordinating plans with other team leaders and product release manager.
Collect relevant statistics which allow measurement of cost and quality of development and support, and identify areas to improve productivity whilst attaining quality standards.
Process and Standards;
Contribute to the development and implementation of relevant processes and standards within the team and department.
Ensure adherence to agreed processes and standards.
Communication;
Facilitate two-way communication of technical and non-technical information within the team and department, via effective ad hoc and formal communication, verbally and in writing.
Communicate effectively and professionally with other departments, including, but not limited to: Account Management, Help Centre and Project Support.
Technical Assurance;
Assure the technical integrity of all developments.
Ensure that all significant technical risks are identified, documented and managed.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential
5+ years experience of managing teams of a minimum of 10 people.
Advanced Project Management skills including planning, risk and issue management.
Experience in formal development processes.
In depth, relevant technical knowledge gained at all levels on software development, up to team leader. Experience of database and web development for business critical applications using some of the following Delphi, C++, C#, .NET, SQL Server
Experience of delivering exceptional customer service within an IT service environment.
Leadership; provides and communicates inspiration and clear direction for the team which is in line with the organisations goals, mission and values.
Performance management; manages the performance of others fairly, clearly and regularly, encouraging and supporting the team to achieve high standards.
Planning and organisational skills; able to establish efficient and appropriate plans for self and others and adapt quickly and effectively to unexpected changes whilst still ensuring objectives are met.
Customer service; understands and responds to customer needs (internal and external) and exceeds expectations where possible.
Communication and team working; works co-operatively with others to achieve a common goal and communicates information in a clear, concise and accurate manner.
Problem solving and decision making; analyses information appropriately in order to find best solutions and takes a balanced view to reach logical conclusions and make relevant decisions.
Commercial and organisational focus; demonstrates understanding of overall business and commercial issues facing company.

CONTEXT
The Software R & D Department is a dynamic department consisting of a number of teams, the size and composition of which may alter according to project demands. Project requirements may involve movement between teams, and varied responsibilities.
The R&D Team Manager reports to the Software Development Manager.
The R&D Team Manager role will also involve interaction with customers at all stages in a development including but not limited to pre-sales and after deployment.
