About the job…

The composite department specialises in the Manufacturing/Production of complex carbon fibre components for a diverse range of customers within the motorsport, wind, offshore, subsea sectors, to name but a few. With its 1396 sqft temperature and humidity controlled clean room and 5mx 1.8m diameter autoclave, trimming, bonding and fitting room all housed under one roof.

Role and Responsibility

• Will be responsible for leading and managing all composite staff and employees and vetting the appropriate skill set needed.
• Manage the day to day running of the facility.
• Generating work and promoting the company.
• Meeting tight production schedules.
• Customer Support - provide technical support to existing and new customers, quoting, scheduling.
• Monitor material costs and cost savings.
• Monitor labour hours and overtime, and implement improvement plans and time management with staff Requirements.
• CAD Design capability.
• Stock control and purchasing of materials, delivery of parts on time.
• Facility house keeping.

Quantitative Information

• Typical headcount 30 employees.

• Responsible for maintenance of plant, machinery and tooling.
• Responsible for the budget for the consumable spend of the relevant cells.

Job Responsibilities

• Clearly communicate objectives and targets to the cell team. Establish cell performance standards aligned to key performance indicators. Measure and monitor performance standards and take corrective action where there is a variance. Ensure the cell activities have the urgency and focus to ensure customer high levels of customer delivery.
• Ensure performance visual controls are up to date. Monitor daily, weekly or monthly performances using standard work methods and take corrective action where there is a variance. Complete a daily production review with the team leaders.
• Allocate manpower and resources between cell operations.
• Develop team member’s skills and knowledge appropriate to their roles.
• Responsible for the appropriate resource and capacity-planning forecast of the cell team within the agreed budget to meet the overall manufacturing plan.
• Define objectives for team leaders. Complete year-end and mid year performance appraisals for team members. Endorse and review skills matrices with team members.
• Briefing and communication to team members. Complete weekly and monthly business briefs to team and incorporate a two-way communication session with team. Lead weekly PRP meeting and ensure a full understanding amongst the team of PRP issues.
• With HR support responsible for the application of disciplinary procedure within the cell up to and including written warning stage.
• Selection and recruitment of team members using the appropriate company recruitment process.
• Produce inputs to the manufacturing strategy and cell improvement plans. This will include any annual capital spend projection.
• Ensure new starters, apprentices and newly promoted employees are properly inducted and an appropriate training plan is documented and implemented. Ensure regular performance reviews take place during the training period.

Safety

• Responsible for the safety and well being of all team members, visitors and contractors within the working environment.
• Ensure all fire, security, safety and housekeeping standards are adhered to.
• Ensure all unscheduled work, e.g. overtime, is appropriately supervised at all times. Ensure end of shift audits are carried out.
• Complete a monthly health and safety inspection is completed.
• Support the monthly health & safety review with the appropriate representatives.
• Ensure that a comprehensive set of risk assessments are in place, up to date and reviewed on a regular basis.
• Ensure that COSHH assessments appropriate to the cell are in place, up to date and reviewed on a regular basis.
• Take full responsibility for accident reporting and investigation for accidents that take place within the cell.
• Ensure work permits and risk assessments are completed and issued as appropriate.
• Implement and sustain 5S initiatives in the cell.

Delivery

• Ensure the production schedule is achieved whilst adhering to quality and cost targets.

Quality

• Ensure all procedures, processes and documentation is in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO14001 quality systems.
• Ensure that any non-conformance is resolved in a timely manner using QI’s, CAR’s and 5D methodology.
• Ensure compliance with work instructions and approved drawings.
• Be constantly trying to improve processes and products by sponsoring a culture of continuous improvement.

Cost

• Manage and deliver to agreed targets all KPI’s. Any deviations to budgets must not knowingly be pursued.

Lean Manufacturing

• Assist in the development and delivery of the clients Lean System strategy for the implementation of lean manufacturing in the cell.
• Build and develop a change culture to ensure the continuous improvement of people, processes and systems.
• Ensure all team members are trained in lean techniques and are encouraged to participate fully in lean initiatives.

Experience and Qualifications

• A typical Production Manager should possess a proven track record of success achieved in a manufacturing operations environment. Previous experience of managing the assembly of medium volume high precision wooden components and assemblies would be preferred. The successful candidate could originate from a Production Engineering background.

• Ideal candidates can be qualified up to degree level but it is essential that they have a formal management qualification ideally gained in a manufacturing environment.

• Experience of lean manufacturing would also be an advantage.

The main aims of this role are ensure …

• Manufacturing Efficiency

Duties will include…

• Ensure all consumable items such as drills/tips etc are held in stock and ordered in advance via Senior Team Leader/Cage Section Coordinator to prevent potential production lines stop.
• Ensure that 5s audits are completed at least once per shift and compared against the standards set out on the 5s audit sheets.
• Ensure that all cage manufacturing cells are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
• Ensure where possible, that multi-machine manning to maximize labour efficiency is utilized.
• Ensure that all cage loading boards are kept up to date and marked off when work in progress starts/finishes
• Ensure that all Employees within your area are trained to a standard capable for them to undertake their expected/required duties so they can operate in a safe and conscientious manner.
• Ensure that all machine dry wipe boards indicate which product/works order is currently running and the required hourly output.
• Ensure all machines have the next job ‘kitted up’ and available by the machine before the previous job finishes.

• Experienced in a similar manufacturing environment.
• Potential candidates may be expected to demonstrate any machining/CNC capabilities which they may have on our client’s current CNC machines.
