An excellent opportunity has become available within a novel research based organisation. The role will cover responsibility for the safety, approvals and performance testing of electrochemical cells and battery systems.
Responsibilities include:
Manage, operate and maintain state of the art battery test systems. Assist with the planning, purchase and installation of new systems.
Write test specifications. Set up and execute tests as required by our scientific and engineering staff.
Extract the data required by our scientists from the results of tests. Manipulate and analyse the data using statistical tools. Present regular reports using Word and Excel.
Assemble wiring harnesses. Designing and making test jigs as required.
Become an expert on the various standards and safety requirements that affect our products. Advise management on these requirements. Organise and carry out tests to show compliance. Monitor changes in the requirements and new specifications.
Liaise with external test houses as necessary for product approval.
Experience and skills:
A qualification in electronics or electrical engineering or related subject. A degree (or related) in Electrochemistry or Physical chemistry will also be considered if the relevant engineering skills can be demonstrated.
The work is based within an instrumentation test environment which works to regulated standards. Experience of product approvals testing, including specification of the test, would be ideal as well as basic wiring and soldering skills.
It will be highly important that you have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written as a key part of this role is to present test reports and discuss the test results with your science and engineering colleagues.
It would also be ideal if you have experience of programming in Visual Basic (VBA).
You will also have the ability to plan your own workload and work with minimum of supervision. You should have ability to see the “big picture” and plan appropriately.
Experience of battery testing and a knowledge of electrochemical principles would be a distinct advantage. Experience of Maccor battery testers would be particularly welcome.
The ability to work safely in a potentially hazardous environment is essential.

Enthusiastic and motivated, you should be highly competent in experimental implementation in the life sciences. Background:
You should have an undergraduate honours degree in biological sciences, biomedical sciences, biochemistry or equivalent with at least a 2:1 classification. This should include laboratory research experience in life or clinical sciences, for example a project in industry, or be supplemented with equivalent laboratory experience after graduation. A relevant Master’s degree (clinical or bioscience-based) including an independent research project would also suffice.
Experience with protein chemistry and electrophoresis would be a considerable advantage; experience of 2D-gel electrophoresis would be ideal. However, training and support in specific methods can be provided for the right candidate.
For a Senior Research Scientist role, in addition to the above, you should have at least 3 years’ experience in a life or clinical science laboratory, ideally including working to industrial standards, and should have operated independently in a research environment designing and enacting your own experimental projects. You should have experience of working as part of project teams, ideally including leading such teams, and training or supervising other members of staff. Experience in managing laboratory logistics and laboratory setup would be advantageous.
