Chiltern Park Recruitment |
Description

|
Our client is a top technology design consultancy with various markets including: medical, aerospace, renewable energy, automotive, consumeer products etc... they are currently looking to recruit an experienced mechanical engineer with 4-5 years of relevant experience. This is a rare exceptional opportunity for a talented creative mechanical design engineer.
Listed below are the key attributes we will be looking for from potential candidates.
Mechanical Engineering degree: From a well-established university with a strong engineering reputation. 1st or Upper 2nd degree preferred.
Good, wide-ranging technical background: University course should cover a range of engineering disciplines ‘V structures, mechanics, dynamics, fluids, thermodynamics, etc. Engineers need to be very flexible. One month you may be designing a refrigeration system; the next you may be designing the mechanism for a drug delivery system. To do this you need to be able to dig back into your engineering training regularly.
Experience: Candidates should have worked in a product design environment, playing an active role in the development team. They should have been involved in taking at least one product through the complete design process. Ideally they should have managed a significant part of the project. Experience of a range of market sectors, product types and manufacturing processes would also be useful.
Able to learn new skills and market areas: Almost every job we undertake is ԤnewԬ to us. Usually the client knows far more about their area of business than we do. So we need to learn fast, match their level of knowledge then add our own expertise to deliver products to meet their wishes.
Good, confident communicator: At the start of any project we have to convince the potential client that we are worth investing in. This is partly a matter of confidence. Typically, engineering staff will be asked to attend these preliminary meetings. They need to listen well; process the information provided and contribute intelligently to the conversation. Ideally, our contribution at this stage should be professional and creative, suggesting that we are well placed to tackle the project. The engineers at these meetings must also ensure that they collect sufficient information to be able to structure a detailed quotation. This will include tasks, deliverables, costs and timescales for the complete project. The quotation is typically prepared jointly by one of the Directors and one of the engineers or designers. Throughout the project we present our work formally to our clients. This needs to be done professionally and confidently.
Creative problem-solving: Our business is design and to be successful we need to be better at than our competitors. That means coming up with novel solutions that are cheaper, more efficient, smaller, more functional, etc. In many cases, part of our brief will be to develop patentable features in the design to block competition.
Logical and well organised: We work under extreme time pressure, and usually engineers will be working on two or more projects at once. To do this efficiently and effectively you need to be well organised in managing your time.
Commercially aware: We sell our design expertise. There is no physical end product. To be successful we have to design at a profit. This means limiting the number of man-hours spent on a task to the number estimated in the quotation. Design is open-ended. It is possible to go on improving a design forever. Engineers need to be pragmatic and draw work to a close when they have developed the best solution available in the allocated time. They also need to be aware of the work that was quoted for and highlight areas of work that are requested beyond the original scope of the quotation. In such cases we may be able to negotiate further funding and hence increased time.
{ Project management skills: Once established, say after a year, an engineer will be expected to manage projects. This will involve selecting and organising the team, managing budgets and timescales, liaising and presenting to the client.
Appreciation of non-functional design aspects: We operate in multi-functional project teams and engineers need to co-operate with designers and electronics engineers and be prepared to compromise in order to blend the visual and functional aspects of a product.
Team member: Most projects are run using small teams. An engineer must be able to work with direct team members and also with staff outside the immediate team. With little hierarchy, things are only achieved here by motivating the team and getting co-operation.
Self-reliant: We will not appoint senior staff to check work regularly. So engineers assume total responsibility for the technical design. Other engineers will be happy to advise, but at the end of the day it is your decision and your responsibility.
Enthusiastic: People here enjoy their work. They like the atmosphere and the variety of work. This is important since it comes through in the results we deliver and how we present them to our clients. You will need to be self-motivating and enthusiastic.
Hardworking and proud of their work: Our workload fluctuates dramatically and sometimes we come under enormous pressure to meet deadlines. On such occasions, staff here are prepared to work late into the night rather than let our clients down. Such pride in our work is essential for the maintenance of our long-term reputation.
Interested and feel you have these attributes and qualifications please appy now!
