Our client manufactures a specialist range of high volume small electro-mechanical devices containing embedded firmware and sells them worldwide.

Due to expansion into new markets they require a Project Engineer to manage small NPI and continuous improvement programmes. The role is likely to involve spending up to 33% of time overseas.

The Job
• NPI - Management of low volume or trial volume builds at local and overseas sub contract manufacturers. Responsibilities will also include acting as a resource for volume NPI projects
• Production – Drive broad DFM (design for manufacture, including assembly and test) principles working with Technology and Operations. Identify and drive make versus buy opportunities, value engineering activities and other continuous improvement exercises
• Supply Chain – support for procurement programmes and on-going business as usual support. Preparation of relevant documentation for quotations.
• Process – On-going maintenance and improvement of existing processes and development of new processes as required to match the growth of the business.
• Quality – Support the development and implementation of sound production quality control plans with technology and sub-contractors.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate should have a good mix of the following skills and experience;
• Experience in high volume electromechanical development and manufacture
• Working within and managing NPI projects
• Working with sub-contract electronics manufacturers
• Running successful continuous improvement programs

• Maintain an active and continuous supplier quality improvement campaign and provide an auditable supplier quality system for the purchase of production materials including; supplier approvals, incoming goods inspection, non-conforming materials and vendor rating.
• Establish in-process and final inspection criteria and regimes. Conduct ‘Out Of Box’ (OBQ) inspections to ensure quality of all goods prior to dispatch.
• Monitor the reliability of products in the field. Investigate the mode and cause of failure of units returned from the field. Ensure corrective and preventive actions are taken.
• Assist in the resolution of customer complaints.
• Assist in establishing, monitoring and maintaining an effective internal non-conformance process.
• Audit internal systems and processes and follow up on appropriate corrective actions.

The ideal candidate should have a good mix of the following skills and experience;

• HNC qualification or equivalent in a relevant discipline
• Quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
• Experienced in Quality Management System (particularly ISO9001)
• Experienced in lean manufacturing processes and process improvement initiatives (preferably Six Sigma)
• PC Skills and user knowledge of Microsoft Office, Access, Excel and Word
• Continuous improvement and problem solving experience
• Exposure or experience of- FMEA, APQP, PPAP, 8D, 6 sigma, Lean, SPC, CAPA, DOE, Auditing and problem solving
• A full driving licence
