JOB PURPOSE:
To contribute to the development of electrical design standards, production of protection settings and design philosophies, supporting of assurance processes, and contribution to the objectives of the Asset Management team.
This role includes ensuring that new relay and control technologies are assessed and introduced to our networks in an effective manner, and that these assets are scheduled for replacement when they are at the end of their working lives.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Assisting with the development of non-load related plans for the next distribution price control review in respect of protection, control, automation, and earthing.
2. The development of electrical design standards for distribution, primary and grid substations for use throughout Networks.
3. The review and checking of electrical designs produced by other members of the team commensurate with their skills and experience.
4. Completion of protection studies up to 132kV to determine the most appropriate technical solution for new and reinforced networks as part of the development of schemes prior to approval.
5. The production of protection settings for networks from 11kV up to 132kV for all Directorates within Networks in accordance with company policies and procedures.
6. Supporting and mentoring other members of the team to enhance their technical knowledge and experience.
7. Complying with the requirements of the designer as determined by the CDM Regulations.
8. Post fault protection analysis for incidents up to 132kV which may include visits to operational substations where compliance with safety rules and procedures is mandatory.
9. Ensure the delivery of the departmental HSS Action Plan in support of our Incident and Injury Free culture and our Safe and Responsible Company ambition.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Electrical Design Engineers within Asset Management have a wide range of responsibilities as set out below. This includes the responsibility for the introduction of new technology for distribution assets, for setting inspection and maintenance policy, and for failure investigations and follow-up. Additionally it includes liaison and support to procurement and operational units for assets and asset populations.
Therefore, by taking responsibility for the cradle to grave life of assets, they optimise the whole life costs of assets. They will also contribute to our knowledge of assets, providing regulatory and other returns and management reports, and will understand and interpret statistical information.
There is a requirement to undertake post fault analysis of network protection and plant operations up to 132kV depending on knowledge and experience, and to initiate corrective actions which will require a confident approach when interfacing with other parts of the business.
The individual is required to support the development of electrical design standards to provide in house and external resources with a comprehensive suite of standards. All design standards must be aligned with plant/equipment specifications to ensure a consistent and harmonised approach.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge of the design, operation and management of distribution assets at all voltage levels.
Excellent understanding of physical asset management best practice and regulatory requirements.
Ideally qualified to degree or HND level or equivalent in electrical engineering or another engineering subject.
Articulate and numerate and able to interpret statistical information, understanding trends and able to match these to quantified asset risks.
