Thursday 15th May 2008 Norway arrives in the north-east

Norwegian companies, riding high on the global resources boom, are eyeing up the labour market of north-east England to help fuel their growth.
Up to 500 new highly skilled jobs could be created in the region, as Norwegian companies look to capitalise on the rise in oil and gas production in the sea between the British Isles and the Scandinavian country.
Magne Eide of Norwegian logistics company J Martens said: "We think the North East will become more and more important for us, as many Norwegian companies plan to establish themselves in the area."
The shortage of skilled labour in Norway is Newcastle's gain, according to regional development agency ONE North East's Patrick Kendell.
"This is a real opportunity for the North East," he said, adding that it could create jobs in a variety of fields, from IT to engineering.
As the price of oil approaches $127 (£65) a barrel - up from $100 at the beginning of the year - it seems that Norway is well-placed to continue growing, and the north-east's skilled workers are ready to reap the rewards.
