Thursday 15th May 2008 Flexible working expanded

Parents across the country look set to benefit from new rules announced today regarding flexible working hours.
The government has unveiled plans to expand the right to flexible working to all parents with youngsters under the age of 16.
This will mean that 4.5 million parents will have the right to ask their bosses for shifts that fit more appropriately around their family life.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, the prime minister Gordon Brown said: "The right to request flexible working has been working for lots of people over the last few years.
"It is working for parents of young children and now it can apply to children under 16 where families need time off to help bring [them] up."
He added that the government believed that the move would widely be welcomed by employers and added that it would not mean parents would necessarily be granted the hours they want.
"Flexible working is the right to request flexible working, it is not an automatic right to flexible working," Mr Brown insisted.
