Men urged to take up flexible working

Men urged to take up flexible working

Working men with children are being urged to take advantage of the changes to flexible working rules which are coming into force next year.

Yesterday, the prime minister Gordon Brown unveiled plans to extend the right to request flexible working to all parents with youngsters under the age of 16.

But concerns have been raised that busy fathers will not be as pro-active in asking their employers for flexible hours as mothers will.

Imelda Walsh, human resources director of Sainsbury's, says that currently far more females were requesting flexible hours than males.

It also found that more men were rejected when they requested moving their shifts to juggle family life than women.

Speaking to The Times, she said: "This is an issue of importance to both men and women so it is a concern that men are less likely to ask to work flexibly, then twice as likely to be turned down.

"We need to tackle that and make sure they do not feel nervous about making the request."
