Friday 16th May 2008 Firms competitive over recruiting graduates

There is "vast competition" among companies to recruit graduates in certain sectors, one employment expert has claimed.
According to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), firms continue to vie for the attentions of candidates with specific skills.
Elspeth Farrar, communications director at the association, said that there are "very definite shortages" of graduates in certain "very specific degree" areas.
"In that kind of situation there is vast competition amongst employers to recruit students because there is just fewer of them available," she explained.
The AGCAS forecasts that vacancies for graduates will increase by 16.4 per cent this year.
It found that 69.5 per cent of companies have more vacancies than last year and 43.5 per cent of employers experienced a shortfall in filling their available posts in 2007.
A recent survey by Executive Connections, reported by Recruitment Times, found that 33 per cent of companies were seeking to recruit graduates in 2007 compared to eight per cent in 2006.
