Friday 4th July 2008 Foreign investment brings engineering jobs to the north-east

Thousands of jobs in engineering have been generated in the north east due to several foreign investment projects, the Northern Echo has reported.
Figures released by the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) revealed that 1,572 jobs in engineering will be created by the end of the year thanks to over 60 investment schemes which have aimed to take advantage of the region's engineering industry.
Simon Goon, head of business investment at One NorthEast, told the Northern Echo: "The One NorthEast inward investment team has worked on a number of high profile projects over the past year, bringing a number of new jobs into the region that are of great value to the north-east economy."
Engineering jobs have been made available in Blyth due to new developments made by Californian wind energy firm Clipper Windpower while 250 jobs in engineering were generated by Fabricom when it created a base in North Tyneside.
Speaking to the Northern Echo, Nigel Carlton, offshore services chairman of Fabricom, said: "The engineering heritage of the north-east ensures that the skills necessary for our business can be found locally."
Over 70,000 people are employed in the north-east by nearly 600 foreign investors.
