Friday 4th July 2008 Apprenticeships help with getting a job in engineering

Job seekers should consider taking an apprenticeship as it is often an effective way to gain employment, according to the Learning and Skills Council.
With skills shortages in the IT and engineering industry, people who are looking for jobs in engineering and IT jobs would benefit from an apprenticeship as it would improve their chances of getting recruited.
Stephen Gardner, director of apprenticeships at the Learning and Skills Council, said: "While they do include the traditional skills that people associate with apprenticeships, they also include things like accountancy, media studies or training, IT and cultural and creative apprenticeships."
Apprenticeships often enhance the quality of a CV, so just by being an apprentice, job seekers are more likely to get employed.
Paul McLaren, an apprentice with BAE Systems, said: "I'd promote apprenticeships from my experience. It's helped me not only as an employee of a company, but as a person. It helps direct your commitment to what you want to be doing, and it helps you reach where you want to be in the future."
Finalists have now been announced for the National Apprenticeship Awards 2008.
