Monday 7th July 2008 Supermarket generates retail jobs in Northern Ireland

Hundreds of jobs in retail will be created in Northern Ireland if plans for the opening of a new supermarket are approved, reports the Ulster Star.
Up to 200 new jobs in retail will be made available in Crumlin if supermarket giant Tesco is successful with its proposal to build a 30,000 square foot store in the region as part of a national expansion initiative.
Colin Hampsey, regional corporate affairs manager for Tesco, told the Ulster Star: "Crumlin has a rapidly increasing population and we believe that a store in the town centre would encourage more people in the area to shop locally."
Tesco has claimed that employees with retail jobs in Crumlin will not be affected as the supermarket chain will look to work with local businesses in order to improve the local economy.
"Tesco is always happy to work with local traders and the local community to develop appropriate initiatives to encourage customers to visit other shops in the area," Mr Hampsey told the Ulster Star.
Tesco took over German company Metro AG this year to become the world's third largest retailer, according to reports.
