Friday 8th August 2008 Engineering jobs - Firms still recruiting engineering jobs

Despite the current economic climate, businesses are still expanding and looking to recruit people for engineering jobs, according to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
A report of 400 firms in the engineering and technology industry by the IET revealed that 63 per cent are aiming to recruit staff this year while 90 per cent will be creating new civil engineering jobs.
Robin McGill, IET chief executive, said: "Unlike other surveys, ours is entirely focussed on engineering and technology, so the results give a clear view of what is happening just in this sector."
The majority of the new engineering jobs will be available in the UK as 94 per cent of companies are primarily recruiting from Britain, according to the report.
"The survey shows, that, although economic predictions are becoming increasingly pessimistic, engineering and technology is a vibrant, expanding sector which is creating new jobs and there is a strong demand for new skills," added Mr McGill.
According to the CBI/Experian Regional Trends Survey, total manufacturing output was unchanged in the past three months at the national level.
