Monday 11th August 2008 Graduate jobs available in autumn

Employers are currently considering the number of jobs they will offer to university leavers when they graduate, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
A significant number of graduate jobs are likely to become available this autumn as research by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) revealed that the number of graduate level positions on offer rose by 11.7 per cent on 2007 figures.
Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), said: "In some sectors, particularly the public sector, hiring trends are continuing as normal and you see that in the demand for medical, nursing or social care work."
The extent to which the graduate job market has been affected by the credit crunch can not be calculated until the next round of recruitment, according to Ms Fairweather.
"It's quite difficult to tell how things will develop now as traditionally people don't hire over the summer," she added.
According to the AGR, one third of employers have dropped the 2:1 degree as their main application criterion for graduate jobs because they are looking for more on a candidate's CV.
