Friday 22nd August 2008 Financial jobs - Women encouraged by workplace diversity

Females are more likely to apply for a financial job if there are already women on the board of the company, according to new research. Businesses with women on the board had a higher number of female applicants for financial jobs, was one of the findings by an American study entitled "Advancing Women Leaders: The Connection Between Women Board Directors and Women Corporate Officers". Ilene H. Lang, president of Catalyst, an organisation which promotes women in the workplace, said: "Women leaders are role models to early- and mid-career women and, simply by being there at the top, encourage pipeline women to aspire to senior positions." Firms should have more women in prominent positions as it will give out a positive message and attract more applicants for financial jobs, claims Ms Lang. "A gender diverse board signals the right tone at the top and the importance that a company places on creating a successful work environment for all employees," she added. Firms which had 30 per cent women board directors in 2001 had 45 per cent more women corporate officers by 2006, according to the study.
