Wednesday 27th August 2008 Computer skills vital at work

People looking for new jobs should be aware that computer skills are necessary in today's modern workplace, claims the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
In an increasingly technological work environment, employees need to develop IT skills to be able to work successfully within a business as many key functions are based around computer use, states the CIPD.
Martyn Sloman, learning and development advisor for the CIPD, said: "For people in work there are two key clusters of skills that are rising in importance. One of those, broadly, is IT skills."
According to Mr Sloman, it is not just for jobs in IT that applicants need computer skills, all new jobs now require employees to have some ability with a computer.
"The workplace is changing quite a bit. The routine processing type of work is disappearing and people are being expected to use far more of their initiative," he added.
Graduate statistics from 2008 reveal that respondents rated themselves highly on their 'ability to take their own initiative', 'team work' and 'PC skills'.
