Wednesday 3rd September 2008 Retail jobs - Existing skills needed for retail jobs

Senior employees at the high street cosmetic firm Lush have said that having staff with an existing set of skills appropriate to jobs in retail would be "highly advantageous".
Although figures from last year's National Employer Skills survey found that nearly half of businesses had a training programme for their staff, Lush managers have said that having employees who already have the necessary training is preferable.
A large proportion of employers are put off training new candidates in the skills needed for jobs in retail due to the time and expense involved so it is important that job seekers have prior experience in retail jobs, claims Lush.
Staff trainer Lisa Titcomb and retail director Liz Bennett, of Lush, said: "We would definitely appreciate more time being spent on leadership in education - as we focus heavily on this in our training, so it'd be highly advantageous if staff already had an idea or the skills in place."
A great deal of training in British business is still acquired indirectly through 'off-the-job' training, while nearly 50 per cent of those surveyed revealed they had received no work training at all in the past 12 months.
