Myths surround disabled employees

Employers are sometimes put off recruiting disabled employees because they are ignorant about employment law, claims the UK's leading provider of employment services for disabled people.

According to Remploy, which last year supported 6,500 disabled people into sustainable jobs in mainstream employment, firms are unaware about the positive impact that employing people with disabilities and health conditions can bring to the workplace.

Remploy argue that employers should recruit more disabled workers as disabled people are generally less likely to be absent and workplace modifications often cost less than £200.

A spokesperson for Remploy said: "Employers may be afraid of being politically incorrect or needing to make major adjustments. Dispelling myths has to be the prime factor in opening up employment opportunities to disabled people in the future."

Research by Social Firms revealed that there are an estimated 9.8 million people in the UK with some form of disability which equates to one in seven of the population.
