Thursday 4th September 2008 Retail jobs - Bigger companies will still provide retail jobs

While the credit crunch has forced many firms to cut jobs in retail, bigger companies still have the strength to provide new retail jobs, claims the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
The BRC state that small and medium sized retail firms are going out of business because they have less distinctive brands which has contributed to a fatal fall in sales and the loss of retail jobs.
Richard Dodd, spokesman for the BRC, said: "We are seeing a number of retail businesses going into administration this year, these were usually medium sized retail businesses who are less able to take advantage of economies of scale."
Despite this gloomy news, Mr Dodd argues that larger firms will still be able to offer jobs in retail because they have the ability to use economies of scale.
"Bigger businesses will ride this out because they've got the scale and resources to be able to do that," he added.
According to Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index in partnership with TNS, nearly a third of consumers believe there are not many jobs available today.
