Friday 5th September 2008 Retail jobs - Supermarket brings retail jobs to Yorkshire

Jobs in retail will be created in Selby after a supermarket giant announced it will open a new store, the Selby Times has reported. Around 80 new jobs in retail are expected to be generated and 64 existing retail jobs will be saved when Sainsbury's takes over the former Somerfield site at Abbey Walk and recruits its rival's old staff. Property communications manager Emily Annable told the Selby Times: "Works are already under way to transform the former Somerfield store into a new Sainsbury's." Local people are being encouraged to apply for the retail jobs which will be a mix of both part-time and full-time positions. Membership promotion manager for Selby Chamber Peter Gregory told the newspaper: "The news Sainsbury's is providing employment for nearly 150 local people is a fabulous boost. The fact major supermarkets are choosing to come to Selby indicates there's a tremendous amount of confidence in its future prosperity." Sainsbury's store manager Graham Chawner confirmed that preparations are being made for the stores opening in October. Click here for retail jobs
