Friday 19th September 2008 Financial jobs - Financial jobs may come to Manchester

A significant number of finance jobs could be created in Manchester if the Swiss investment bank UBS opts to open up in the city, reports the Manchester Evening News. Up to 1,000 finance jobs may be opened up by the move and more could be on the horizon as the newspaper reported that Goldman Sachs was close to deciding on whether to move some of its workforce to the north-west. A source in Manchester's commercial property sector told the newspaper that representatives of the firms had visited the city and that both banks were considering developing offices there to house finance jobs. "Despite the crisis engulfing the whole finance sector, these global investment projects are driven by institutions' need to cut costs and increase profits. "Manchester has put forward a compelling case which would allow this to happen," the source told the publication. One possible location, according to the source, is Allied London's Spinningfields office complex, which already accommodates the Bank of New York Mellon's Manchester branch.
