Wednesday 1st October 2008 Retail jobs - Supermarket to create thousands of retail jobs

Supermarket giant Tesco is to create 6,000 jobs in retail by the end of the year, according to reports. The news comes despite troubled times in the UK jobs market, with reports suggesting that the number of people unemployed by the end of next year will rise. However, Tesco has reported good pre-tax profit for the 26 weeks up until August 23rd, with £1.44 billion made by the company. As well as the 6,000 retail jobs in the UK, the supermarket also noted that it would be making another 24,000 jobs in retail worldwide. A spokesman for the company said: "These are jobs across the business, but predominantly in stores and distribution. "The figures relate to total jobs we will create this year so some will have already been created." Tesco chief executive, Terry Leahy, added: "Tesco is at its best in tough markets, responding to the changing needs of customers, and that's why we have made good progress this year." In total Tesco employs around 360,000 staff in jobs in retail worldwide. Click here for retail jobs
