Thursday 2nd October 2008 Retail jobs - Retail jobs will benefit from wage increase

People working in retail jobs look set to benefit from the minimum wage rise which is set to happen today. Workers on minimum wage will be paid an extra 21p an hour taking it up to £5.73 an hour for everyone over the age of 22. Independent retailers look set to struggle with the changes as many are already feeling the pinch of the current economic crisis. Jonathan Walmsley from the Federation of Small Businesses told the BBC: "The credit crunch is very real - our members would tell us that. They are experiencing it with bank charges, energy cost rises, and there's now the possibility of water charges as well. "The rise in the minimum wage is just an additional cost that they will incur, but they have to adhere to the law." Those in retail jobs who are currently on minimum wage will benefit from the new rules which will also see the wages of those under the age of 22 rise.
