Wednesday 8th October 2008 Finance jobs - Gender pay gap is a government priority

Addressing and combating the disparity in pay between men and women in finance jobs is a priority for the government, a spokesperson for the Government Equalities Office (GEO) has said. Research by the GEO revealed that men who are employed in finance jobs, on average, get a full-time salary which is 17.2 per cent higher than women and this leads to women staying at home while men become the main breadwinners. According to the spokesperson for the GEO, if the pay gap was reduced then this would give women more encouragement to seek jobs in finance and men would be persuaded to take an active role in childcare in the home. New dads could take up to six months paid paternity leave in the future if a government promise is fulfilled, claims the spokesperson. According to the Office for National Statistics on 'Working Lives', female employment rates have generally increased, although almost half are part time jobs. Click here for financial jobs
