IT jobs - Enthusiasm important for IT jobs

An enthusiasm for technology is more important than a degree when it comes to applying for IT jobs, claims a leading employer.

Skills such as communication and problem solving are highly regarded by IBM, a leading recruiter of people into IT jobs, the Times reports.

Jenny Taylor, the company's head of graduate recruitment, told the newspaper: "We recruit equal numbers of male and female graduates with all degrees and from all backgrounds for roles in sales, business, finance, consulting and project management.

"We are looking for business and personal skills and a passion to want to come and work for us."

However, Ann Swain, chief executive of the Association of Technology Staffing Companies, has called for the IT industry to make itself more appealing to women and therefore widen the pool of talent available for jobs in IT.

"Female representation among IT staff across the UK is only 18 per cent because the industry simply does not sell itself well enough," she stated.
