Monday 20th October 2008 IT jobs - Demand increases for women in IT jobs

There is an increasing demand for more female employees to take jobs in IT in the UK workforce, according to a report.
In a study entitled Engineering and Technology Skills and Demand in Industry, research by the Institution of Engineering and Technology revealed that women employees account for just seven per cent of the IT workforce in the UK.
However, 40 per cent of the firms surveyed in the report said that the number of women applying for IT jobs is on the increase.
Furthermore, female professionals working in IT jobs specifically in the education sector were far better represented, with 16 per cent of employees being women.
The report stated: "There remains a disparity in the gender balance of the technical workforce, compared to the overall workforces of the companies surveyed.
"Clearly the sector still has a long way to go in attracting a better gender balance across the profession at all levels."
Research by the Trades Union Congress revealed that nine out of ten employees value 'working with a great group of people'.
