Friday 21st November 2008 Lying on a CV 'is serious'

Applicants should not lie on their CV as it could have serious consequences, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at REC, said that if a recruiter finds discrepancies in a CV, an applicant is unlikely to get the job and their reputation will be tarnished making it harder for them to seek employment in the same sector.
"The whole application process - of which a CV is part of is designed to identify the skills of an individual, if you are lying about professional qualifications it could be very serious indeed," she said.
All good recruiters will thoroughly check applicants to make sure there are no inaccuracies so it is very unwise to lie on a CV, claims Ms Fairweather.
"We don't think it's very positive and people shouldn't be encouraged to put white lies on their CV. I think most people would recognise that they need to enter an application process honestly," she added.
Research by the Risk Advisory Group revealed that more than 50 per cent of CVs submitted for job applications contained inaccuracies.
