Tuesday 2nd December 2008 Retail jobs - Dragon could save retail jobs at Woolworths

Thousands of jobs in retail could be saved at Woolworths if entrepreneur and star of TV show Dragons' Den Theo Paphitis is successful in his bid for the store.
It has been reported that the businessman is meeting with administrator Deloitte in London to discuss a deal, which could help the troubled high street chain.
Mr Paphitis is not alone in expressing interest in Woolworths as retail rivals Tesco, Waitrose and the property magnate, Ardeshir Naghshineh have all reportedly been in talks with bosses of the ailing store.
The Dragon made his business reputation by rescuing stationers Rymans and underwear chain La Senza from bankruptcy.
Jobs in retail could be under threat after stores have been unsuccessful in attempts to lure shoppers in the run up to the festive period.
Retailers have launched early sales in a bid to draw in consumers, however "it seems efforts at deep discounting have failed to attract significant shopper numbers into stores," noted director of retail consultancy Experian, Jonathan De Mello.
