Wednesday 10th December 2008 Retail jobs - Tough year expected for retail jobs

It will be increasingly difficult for people to get retail jobs next year due to the current economic climate, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Richard Dodd, spokesperson for the trade association, said that he expects there to be further job losses in the retail industry and other sectors as the British economy continues to struggle with the credit crunch. He said: "2009 is clearly going to be a very, very tough year, particularly when it comes to jobs. Job losses tend to follow tough conditions rather than being the initial cause of the conditions." Mr Dodd went on to say that it was not all doom and gloom in the retail sector as recent VAT cuts and falling interest rates may encourage consumers to keep shopping and improve the possibility of creating more jobs in retail. "There are one or two reasons for optimism, which of course are to do with the big discounts the retailers are offering," he added. According to the GfK NOP Consumer Confidence Barometer for November, confidence in the "personal financial situation over the next 12 months" has risen two points. Click here for retail jobs
