Thursday 11th December 2008 Retail jobs - Firms offer apprentice retail jobs

Some of Britain's top businesses have announced they will offer hundreds of new apprenticeships for jobs in retail.
Retailers such as Sainsbury's, Tesco, Superdrug and Phones4U have promised they will significantly expand their apprenticeship schemes to help younger people get jobs in retail.
The announcement comes on the back of the launch of the National Apprenticeship Service and skills secretary John Denham anticipates that one in five young people could eventually be involved in an apprentice scheme.
"It's great that private sector employers are making such a commitment to, and an investment in, their workforce," he said.
Overall, 10,000 apprenticeship places are planned with 7,000 going towards people seeking construction jobs, which will contribute towards the government's public sector building commitment.
Ed Balls, schools secretary, said: "Employers recognise that they need well trained staff to compete and succeed in the market place. This significant increase of available apprenticeships will help ensure they have the skilled staff they want.
Some £7 billion has been spent on construction projects by the government and its agencies this year.
