Wednesday 17th December 2008 IT jobs - English students 'well equipped' for IT jobs

English students are more likely to have the necessary skills to help them find employment in top IT jobs, according to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL).
Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary of the union, said that the quality of teaching and facilities in English secondary schools meant that students will have the ability to be suitable for many jobs in IT.
"Internationally speaking, English schools are probably the best, or certainly amongst the best equipped in the world and the teachers are amongst the most ICT ready," he said.
Mr Johnson went on to say that more could be done in primary schools to ensure that younger pupils are ready for work in the constantly evolving IT sector.
"Things haven't quite got that far in primary schools, not least because primary schools haven't normally got the resources," he added.
Research by Becta revealed that secondary schools are far more likely than primaries to allow learners any informal access to their ICT facilities.
