Wednesday 17th December 2008 School leavers should 'seek employment immediately'

School leavers who are not going into further education must find a job as soon as possible, according to the Institute for Employment Studies (IES).
Jim Hillage, director of research at the IES, said that people should look for job opportunities immediately after finishing school because they will be less likely to find work the longer they have been out of employment.
"There is quite strong evidence that the longer you are out of employment, or training as a young person, the harder it is to get a job in the long term," he said.
Mr Hillage went on to say that the number of people who are not in education or training has been declining because the government is keen to trace those who leave home and encourage them into work.
"One of the difficult things with kids when they leave school is tracking where they actually end up or what they are doing, especially if they are from disadvantaged backgrounds," he said.
Research by the Scottish government revealed that the proportion of young people entering further or higher education has risen to just fewer than 56 per cent in 2007-08.
