Thursday 18th December 2008 Construction jobs - Plant expansion sees jobs boost

Hundreds of new engineering jobs are set to be created in Kent as Thames Water has been given the green light to expand one of its treatment sites in the county.
Under the utility firm's newly-approved plans, its Belvedere treatment facility, located close to the town of Bexley, will be expanded by as much as 44 per cent, thereby allowing it to deal with greater volumes of waste and minimising any risk of overflow into the nearby River Thames.
According to the firm, work on the four-year project will begin at the start of spring 2009, with as many as 200 jobs to be created in a recruitment drive, 22 of which will be permanent positions.
Commenting on the news, John Waters, head of regeneration at the local council, told the Bexley Times: "As the downturn in the national economy intensifies, the promise of 200 jobs in the local area is very welcome."
Just this week, fellow water firm United Utilities announced that is to create a number of new engineering jobs through its newly-launched project to replace ageing pipes in and around the twon of Congelton.
