Friday 2nd January 2009 Finance jobs - Finance jobs 'pay the most'

People who work in finance jobs in the City of London are the best paid employees in the UK, according to a new investigation.
A report by the GMB Union revealed that employees in the capital's finance and banking sector earn an average salary of £82,000 a year, which is more than two-and-a-half times the national average of £31,300.
The research also found that people working in London earned the most in the UK, with an average wage of £46,000 a year, which is almost twice as much as in other regions.
However, concerns have been raised that the financial downturn may have an impact on earnings across the board.
Paul Kenny, general secretary of the GMB Union, said: "We will have to see if average pay holds up in 2009 in the face of this slowdown."
The British Chambers of Commerce has called on the government not to raise the national minimum wage in the near future as businesses are continuing to struggle with overheads.
