Tuesday 13th January 2009 Retail jobs - Sainsbury's announce new retail jobs

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has revealed it is to create between 3,000 and 4,000 new retail jobs.
The announcement of new retail jobs came after the firm returned record Christmas figures and like-for-like sales up 4.5 per cent, when many of its competitors struggled.
Justin King, chief executive, said its sales prices would remain for some time and the store would look to expand its floorspace by around three to four per cent.
"We have continued to develop the Sainsbury's offer and demonstrated our ability to respond to rapidly changing customer needs," he said.
Looking forward, Mr King predicted the economic environment would remain "challenging" throughout 2009.
Key to the stores' success appears to be its 'basics' range Mr King, announcing the company's third quarter results noted it had shown the highest growth, with sales up more than 40 per cent.
Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer has been forced to close some stores leading to wide scale redundancies.
