Tuesday 20th January 2009 Engineering jobs - Road improvements 'could create' engineering jobs

New engineering jobs could be created after the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that it would spend £6 billion on improving capacity on some of the UK's busiest roads.
Last week, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced that the government wanted to create 520 new lane miles on existing roads by extending and opening up the hard shoulder.
Commenting on the proposal, Mr Hoon said: "It is clear that many of our major roads also need more capacity and we are committing up to £6 billion to improve the national road network - including extending hard shoulder running to some of the busiest parts of M1, M25, M6, M62, M3 and M4, providing much-needed relief from congestion."
Mr Hoon has also revealed that the government is backing the new third runway at Heathrow airport and that it was considering the feasibility of setting up a new rail link between London and the West Midlands.
It was announced in November that London will benefit from £2.1 million worth of funding from the Urban Congestion Performance Fund.
