Monday 26th January 2009 Engineering jobs - Railway improvements creates engineering jobs

People in engineering jobs will soon be working on £4 billion worth of railway track renewals, Network Rail has confirmed. The company has made adjustments to the phasing of the project, with plans to introduce "new, more efficient" working practices - something that will reduce volumes during the first year but not alter end-of-project targets. Commenting on the five-year scheme, Network Rail's director of infrastructure investment Simon Kirkby said the company was "committed" to investing in the UK rail network. "But we must deliver value for money for this work and it makes sense to take advantage of new, more efficient methods of working in our future planned work," he said. Network Rail confirmed that it had found seven contractors for £800 million of track enhancements - with Balfour Beatty, Carillion and Jarvis being among the firms to secure tenders. The company recently revealed that Rick Haythornthwaite had been appointed its new designate chairman. Click here to search for engineering jobs
