Thursday 29th January 2009 Retail jobs - Asda promises new retail jobs

Supermarket giant Asda has announced it is to create 7,000 new retail jobs this year.
The chain also revealed it is to recruit up to 3,000 long-term unemployed job seekers into retail jobs through Local Employment Partnerships and Remploy.
Furthermore, the retailer said it also hopes to offer more full and part-time employment to people with disabilities and health conditions.
Andy Bond, president and chief executive officer, said the company's track record of recruiting and retaining people "is second to none, which is why we have the lowest turnover and most motivated workforce in British retail".
Employment secretary James Purnell has welcomed the announcement, which followed a week of job cuts throughout the economy.
"Local Employment Partnership's such as ASDA have been a real success," he said.
"We're on target to get 250,000 long-term unemployed people back into work through the scheme and thanks to the extra money we got in the Pre-Budget report last November we are also opening it up to people who have just lost their jobs."
The most recent national statistics put the figure of unemployed people at 1.92 million.
