Thursday 20th March 2008 Airport expansion could 'double' jobs

Thousands of jobs in administration, retail and other areas could be created by a new airport expansion in the Midlands.
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has submitted plans for a main runway extension to the local council, which has responded positively to the idea.
The proposed 400 metre extension to the main runway would allow non-stop flights to China and the American west coast from the Midlands hub, boosting BIA's passenger appeal and creating jobs in the process.
The airport's planning proposal has in fact claimed that the total number of jobs at the airport after completion of the project could rise to about 19,000 by 2030, compared with only 10,500 at present.
Clive Dutton, the council's acting director of regeneration, claimed: "Strengthening Birminghams international travel links is very important and echoes the White Paper's point about BIA meeting more of the region's air travel demand."
In addition to job creation, it is claimed that by 2030 an income of nearly £1 billion a year would be yielded by an expanded BIA.
