Wednesday 26th March 2008 Glasgow Airport station plans raise local job prospects

Planning proposals have been released for locating a station at Glasgow Airport and developing rail links to the hub as part of major regeneration plans.
Promising to create numerous jobs, a new rail link will see 5.4 miles of existing track upgraded between Shields Junction and Paisley Gilmour Street station, while a further 1.2miles of track will be laid between Paisley St James Station and the new platforms on the airport's doorstep, should plans get the green light.
Some 650 new jobs in administration, construction and engineering could be created over the next ten years in Glasgow and Renfrewshire as the route becomes a major transport link, while it is claimed that 700 more jobs could be generated in Paisley town centre by 2015.
Hailing the importance of both rail and road links to the airport, councillor Alistair Watson, chairman of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, said: "Every major international city has an airport rail link and Glasgow should be no different.
"Once the M74 extension, Glasgow Airport Rail Link and the Crossrail projects are built, the airport will have the best surface access of any in the UK."
The new rail link and airport station are part of Glasgow Airport's £31 million Skyhub project, which revolves around the construction of a new terminal building with state-of-the-art purpose-built facilities for security procedures.
