Wednesday 30th April 2008 Next mayor 'must keep business happy'

The concerns of the retail sector and a healthy business environment should be the priorities for any new London mayor, a consensus of experts have claimed.
Richard Dodd, spokesperson for the British Retail Consortium, said: "Any mayor ought to be focusing on the implications of their policies for retailers.
"Transport matters enormously, in terms of customers being able to access London's retail centres including central London. Also security and crime; there certainly has been substantial growth in retail crime, which is costly for retailers but also has an enormous human cost as well."
Nigel Bourne, director of the Confederation of British Industry London, added that it was key to make London a great place to live, work and do business, urging the winner of the mayoral contest to ensure a healthy relationship between the GLA and firms small and large.
He cautioned: "Whoever wins the mayoral election faces three huge challenges: ensuring the timely and effective delivery of Crossrail; implementing the skills strategy outlined by the business-led London Skills and Employment Board; and preparing for the 2012 Games and creating a lasting legacy."
Nick Winch, London policy manager for the Federation of Small Businesses, also agreed that the mayoral role required the fostering of a positive business climate, where start-ups can thrive and new jobs can be created.
