Description JOB SPECIFICATION – DESIGN ENGINEER (EM Specific)

**** is a global sensor solutions technology company working extensively in the automotive, industrial and consumer product fields. The company supplies a range of non-contact and 'smart' sensors for driveline and engine management systems and developed the first Reed Switch based crash sensor technology, commonly used in airbag deployment systems and seatbelt pretentioners. **** recently delivered its 300 millionth safing sensor since it created the market in 1983.

Main Responsibilities

General
• Support the **** Business Unit Strategy to grow the business in line with **** Strategy.
• Meeting objectives and goals of the company in relation to new product development.

Engineering Team Focus
• Sensor Solution Product Design and Development
• Custom product design and development through **** Design Factory in response to Sales department enquiries.
• Bookshelve projects and Standard product design and development through Design Factory.
• Sourcing and development of new technology aligned to strategic focus.
• Technology and Applications Demonstrations.

Product Design
• New Product design using 3D CAD modeling system.
• Product design enhancements through CI & VAVE projects.
• Use and develop Hamlin Gold Standard system to evolve new product.
• Scope, define and develop bookshelve and standard products.
• Use tools such as FMEA as a pro-active engineering quality method to help identify and counter weak points in the early conception phase.
• Identify and design in low cost materials from low cost countries.
• Perform feasibility analysis using simulation techniques and real life testing via DOE and other test methods.

Product Focus : Utilities Management

Process / Manufacturing Techniques
• Injection Moulded Plastic Part Design / Insert Moulded Plastic/Metal Part Design
• PCB Assembly
• Low Pressure Overmoulding / Encaspsulation


Program Management / Project Development
• Use of APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) process and associated documents.
• Perform and accompany customer and supplier visits.
• Presentation of project updates to Customer and Management at regular intervals using RYG status system.
• Ability to manage a portfolio of projects for range of technologies and customer markets.
• Use and develop Lessons Learned system.

Creativity & Innovation
• The role requires the engineer to be energized and motivated to work within a 'Creative Workshop' environment to develop new and enhance existing products.
• Demonstrate Hamlin products and applications, leading to opportunity for more sensor development opportunities.

Culture & Environment
• Work within the **** Design Factory Culture and Process of product development.
• Requirement to support the Global **** Business Unit with Engineering support, travel will be required to perform this job function.
• Expectation to work hard to maintain the Design Factory culture that has been evolved.
• Engineering knowledge is expected to be shared to develop projects across the business.
• Expectation to attend out of hours shows and seminars as and when appropriate.
• Use of Brainstorm sessions within engineering and with external resources as and when appropriate.
Additional Responsibilities

Supply Chain
• Support the focus on Strategic Purchasing and Supplier Development.
• Support and assist with Category Management System.
• Assist with rationalization of suppliers and materials.
• Support and assist with Supplier Development and SQA.
• Source appropriate suppliers in conjunction with purchasing department.

Operations
• Support the focus and set-up of Global **** and sub-contract partner manufacturing sites.
• Co-ordinate and support project deliverables allowing products to be transferred to low cost manufacturing sites.
• Support global CI (Continuous Improvement) and VA/VE (Value Analysis / Value Engineering) initiatives

Electronics & Technology
• Input to sourcing and development of new technology aligned to strategic focus.
• Assist with creating Technology Datasheets and application notes for education purposes across business.
• Expectation is that Design and Project Engineers will be fully involved in technology implementation through product demonstrations and bookshelve projects.

Tooling & Equipment
• Assist with specifying tooling and equipment requirements for production phase of sensor programs.
• Assist via project teams the Development of Hamlin Brand Equipment for distribution across **** manufacturing plants and sub-contract sites.
• Assist with identifying new contacts within the tooling / equipment supplier base.
• Support global strategy of DFM for either low cost manufacture products or products with manumation/automation.
• Assist with development of new processes required to compliment new product/technology development.

Job Specific Requirements

Staff Management Scope
• Responsibility for product design and project management in connection with Design Factory project team.
• Responsible for bringing creative and innovative ideas into the business to develop and launch new products.
• Responsible to Senior Project Engineer.

Qualifications & Requirements
• Degree in Engineering, Physics or related subject.
• Proven track record of successful product design and development with a Minimum of 3 years 3D modeling experience.
• 3 to 5 years experience in a similar environment Good organizational and team working skills with good career progression to date.

Preferred Experience
• Automotive within a QS9000/TS16949 environment.
• Automotive industry product design will be an advantage, with experience of products used in ‘under bonnet’ / engine compartment environment.
• Proven Customer project management experience.

Departmental Role
• Provide technical leadership and guidance.
• Regularly inform the Customer, Management team, Senior Engineers and/or Sales of project status against mutually agreed completion target for timing and finance.
• Liaise with other departments to obtain further data, set and maintain controls and to provide guidance and instructions.
• Provide support and guidance to other projects within the business.
